Daily Picks - March 3rd, 2009

It was a really light night on the schedule with just one game and we've maintained our roll with getting that pick correct!
Overall Record: 32-12
February 24th: 7-4
February 25th : 4-0
February 26th: 7-3
February 27th: 3-2
February 28th: 6-2
March 1st: 4-1
March 2nd: 1-0
On to today's picks in a really busy night in the NHL with 12 games on the schedule.
PHI@BOS=>BOS, Both these teams are coming off a loss. The Flyers lost 3-0 to the Devils and were completely outplayed. Given that there are a lot of names on their roster that have been in trade talks, I imagine they will have a tough time tonight. Moreover, Tim Thomas will be looking for redemption after letter in a stinker of a goal against the Capitals.
CAR@WSH=>WSH, The Hurricanes have to be one of the worst "playoff" teams this year. Somehow or another, they manage to stay in the race with a few wins here and there. The Caps had the expected let-down game against the Panthers so expect them to come back with a solid effort tonight against the 'Canes.
FLA@ATL=>FLA, This game is actually difficult to pick. The Thrashers have been playing well and Kovalchuk had 5pts in their last game. The Panthers are coming of a big win against the Caps and I expect them to come out and have a great game.
LAK@CBJ=>CBJ, The playoff aspirations of the LA Kings have all but disappeared. After tough losses in the last few games, it looks as though the Kings have run out of steam and are starting to fade out of the playoff picture. The Jackets came off a loss against the Canucks and I expect them to get back to their winning ways.
NJ@TOR=>NJ, I'm calling this the upset special of the night. Both of these teams have been playing well but for whatever reason, the Leafs usually give the Devils some trouble. It may end up going to OT or a shootout, as all Leaf games have been going to as of late. Update: Moore and Antropov sitting so this is no longer an upset in the making (1:34pm)
CGY@OTT=>OTT, Alex Auld has been playing well of late. Iginla became the franchise leader in points in the wild 8-6 loss to the Lightning. Could it be that some of the injuries the Flames have sustained may start showing its impact? Guys like Bourque and Langkow are not good offensively, but great defensively.
PIT@TB=>PIT, The Pens might have Crosby in the line-up tonight. The Lightning are coming back from the long western Canada road trip and it's the first game back. That usually means trouble.
EDM@NSH=>NSH, Pekka Rinne has been playing just as well as Steve Mason, without all the hype and fanfare. He's owned the Oilers this year as they have had difficulty getting more than 1 goal against him. Plus, the Oilers are coming off an ugly 3-2 win against the Wild and the Preds are coming off an 8-0 butt-kicking of the mighty Red Wings.
ANA@CHI=>CHI, The Ducks have managed to keep their heads above water during this grueling road trip they have been on. They have managed to beat some struggling teams but when they faced stiffer competition, they showed their true colors. Chicago has picked their game up again so expect this to be a win by the Hawks.
DET@STL=>DET, This game should actually be really good. Mike Babcock and the Wings won't be in a good mood after that last game. The Blues have been one of the best teams in the league in the last 20 games or so. They are also fighting for their playoff lives. In the end, the talented Wings will pull this one out.
MIN@VAN=>VAN, Taking their recent trends, this should be no contest. Vancouver realizes that a win here will be huge in taking one more step in cementing a playoff birth. Louie has looked great in the last 5, as has the team in front of him. Hopefully they are not looking ahead to the Sharks!
DAL@SJ=>SJ, Mismatch of the day! The Stars look terrible as of late and they get to visit the toughest place to play in the NHL. Big win for the Sharks.

Sports-fix's own Will Lockwood on CKNW980 today

Sports-fix's own Will Lockwood has been getting tremendous notariety for his research into the bias in officiating. As he stated in his post last month, this was all started with a good old argument between a Canucks fan and Oilers fan. We all know how it has turned out, with Will's research being used in an article in the Edmonton journal. Congratulations to Will for his new found celebrity status.

Here is the original post with more information on the research..

Daily Picks - March 2nd, 2009

What a goofy night of hockey we saw! Eight goals by the Tampa Bay Lightning, with a number of goals on the power play, was absolutely stunning for two reasons: 1) The previous game against the Canucks, the Bolts were awful and couldn't score if their life depended on it and 2) Kipper and the Flames were playing very well and the Flames had one of the top PKs in the game. Go figure...And my Canucks put together one of their best efforts in the season in terms of special teams, physical play and puck movement.
Overall Record: 31-12
February 24th: 7-4
February 25th : 4-0
February 26th: 7-3
February 27th: 3-2
February 28th: 6-2
March 1st: 4-1
A light schedule in the NHL today with only one game, tomorrow's schedule will be a lot of fun as it will be the last games before the trade deadline.
COL@NYI=>NYI, Yann Denis has been playing fantastic of late. Really, these are two terrible teams and currently, the Avs look a lot worse. Considering this is the last game on their road trip, they are probably looking past this game and looking forward to sleeping in their own beds.

Daily Picks - March 1st, 2009

Well, another interesting night of hockey. What is up with the Leafs? They can't even lose when they are supposed to and are now, 7 points out of a playoff spot. It would be funny to see them finish 9th and 1 point out.
Record: 27-11
February 24th: 7-4
February 25th : 4-0
February 26th: 7-3
February 27th: 3-2
February 28th: 6-2
On to today's picks. Again, the Philly/NJ game is already in progress so I won't be making a pick on that one.
FLA@WSH=>FLA, I'm taking the Panthers tonight b/c of two reasons: 1) they should be more desperate after getting waxed by the Devils and 2) the Caps had a huge win in Boston and I imagine this ia perfect let-down game
LAK@CHI=>CHI, The Blackhawks have been struggling as of late but I think they will use this game to bounce back in the win column.
PIT@DAL=>PIT, The Stars have been floundering and have lost four in a row, all at home. The injuries have finally caught up to this team and now it seems as though hey are running out of gas for the stretch run.
TBL@CGY=>CGY, Blowout for the Flames, enough said.
CBJ@VAN=>VAN, My heart says Vancouver, but my head think Columbus will pull this one out given how bad the Canucks played against the Lightning. I have a hope that the last game was just the typical first game back home after a long road trip.

Daily Picks - February 28th, 2009

Well, yesterday's picks didn't go as well as they have been going the last few days. It would have been worse had the Canucks not had horseshoes up their rears and won that game on a flukey goal. In Philadelphia, Schneider has been providing immediate dividends to the Habs with his 3rd goal since coming back to Montreal.
February 24th: 7-4
February 25th : 4-0
February 26th: 7-3
February 27th: 3-2
On to today's picks..Unfortunately, there are three games which have completed already or are in progress so I will only provide my predictions to the games coming up..
SJS@MTL=>MTL, The Habs are on a good roll winning 3 games in a row. The Sharks haven't played that great as of late and barely squeaked out a win in Ottawa.
TOR@OTT=>OTT, The Leafs have been playing great hockey as of late. The battle of Ontario usually brings out a great game so I expect the Sens to put together a good game
BUF@NYI=>BUF, The Sabres are in danger of falling out of the top 8 and hence, they need this game more than the Islanders.
COL@NYR=>NYR, Tortorella has lost his first 2 games as head coach and I'm sure he's not too thrilled about it. This Avs team is the worst team in the Western conference so I expect the Rangers to win this one.
CAR@ATL=>ATL, As good as the Hurricanes have been playing, the Thrashers have been doing well in the role of spoilers. Could be a really high scoring game with two great skating teams.
DET@NSH=>NSH, For some reason, I like the Predators in this one. I'm guessing Ty Conklin will get the start tonight as Osgood started the night before. So taking into account that this is a back to back on the road and Detroit won the night before, the Preds should be able to pull this one out.
STL@PHX=>STL, This should be one of the final nails in the coffin for the Coyotes. The Blues have been playing tremendous hockey in the last 20 games and I expect another good performance from them tonight.
MIN@EDM=>EDM, As a Canucks fan, I just want this game to not go into overtime. EDM is coming off one of the worst performances of the season on home ice so I expect the character guys to have an inspired game. Moreover, it is a game on HNIC, so they definitely should be fired up.

Daily Picks - February 27th, 2009

Well, chalk up another good night in terms of my predictions. The Islanders had the game against the Leafs but lost it in the shootout and Chris Mason turned it a great performance for the Blues who are all of a sudden only 3 points out of a playoff spot.
February 24th: 7-4
February 25th : 4-0
February 26th: 7-3
On to today's picks...
MTL@PHI => PHI, as good as Halak was against my Canucks, the Habs are a completely different team on the road where they have struggled a tonne. Though Briere isn't playing tonight, expect a Flyers' win.
LAK@DET => LAK, upset of the day. With Chris Osgood in net, the Wings are a different team.
PIT@CHI => PIT, they are closing in on the Rangers for a playoff spot, expect them to play desperate
MIN@CGY => CGY, Iginla is on fire as of late and the Wild can't really score, so this should be an easy win for the Flames
TBL@VAN => VAN, the Canucks will be fired up and will look to get back to their winning ways against a crappy Lightning team, especially one on the road.
